It has been 14 years since I was last in Athens and an opportunity to revisit the city in September was met with much excitement. We spent most of the previous visit going around key tourist sites and museums which was pretty exhausting in the summer heat. This time around things were different and days were spent walking the suburbs, markets and parks which provided many excellent photo opportunities.
Camera gear was pared right back to a Leica Q2 with its fixed 28mm lens. I was a little apprehensive about not taking something with a bunch of interchangeable lenses as the 28mm focal length is amongst my least favourite and one that I have not used in anger for more than 30 years. I figured that working outside of my comfort zone would be more challenging and it turned out to be an enjoyable experience. My takeaways from this exercise were 1) The Q2 is a very capable tool when walking the streets of a large city 2) Most subject matter can be made to work with a 28mm lens given enough thought and 3) not having to change lenses is very liberating.
Up until very recently, all variants of the Leica Q series cameras has used the same lens. But a version of the Q3 with a 43mm lens is now available and this, along with the 28mm version, will make a very formidable pair.
