Inspired by tales of bustling souks and the winding maze-like alleys of North African Medinas, we booked a trip to the Moroccan city of Marrakech. Our base for the week was a traditional Riad located in the old town. This meant we were in the heart of the bustling city that, for the uninitiated (such as ourselves), is a full-on assault of the senses. The first 24 hours were a bewildering experience as we adjusted to the sights, smells and general disorientation that came with navigating the labyrinthine network of such an ancient place.

If ever there is a location that begs to be photographed, it is here. Away from the snake charmers and monkey handlers, sitting in a back street cafe simply watching life unfold around us was fascinating, providing countless opportunities for picture taking. As did wandering around the frenetic souks - photo opportunities were literally around every single corner. To capture it all in a single week’s photography is impossible. But by walking several miles each day, we left feeling like we has experienced something of Marrakech’s identity and essence.

Evidence of 2023’s catastrophic earthquake could be found everywhere adding an extra element of chaos to the streets. But to witness the speed of rebuilding in the aftermath of such destruction and personal loss was a lesson in humanities’ resilience that we found very humbling.
